From Exile to Presidency: Tinubu Reflects at Windsor Castle Banquet
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reflected on his journey from political exile to national leadership while addressing a distinguished audience at a state banquet held at Windsor Castle.
Speaking in the presence of King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and other members of the British Royal Family, Tinubu described the moment as deeply humbling, recalling how the United Kingdom once provided him refuge during Nigeria’s years of military dictatorship.

The President noted that during his time in exile, he received protection from British authorities, an experience he said remains etched in his memory as a symbol of solidarity and support for Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.

Tinubu, who is on a historic state visit to the UK, emphasized the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Britain, built on shared history, democratic ideals, and institutional ties. He highlighted the enduring influence of British legal and governance systems on Nigeria, referencing milestones such as the Magna Carta as foundational to modern democratic principles.

He also praised the contributions of Nigerians in the United Kingdom, particularly within the National Health Service, noting that Nigerian professionals continue to play a vital role in healthcare delivery across the country.
In addition, Tinubu pointed to cultural and sporting figures of Nigerian descent, including Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Maro Itoje, and Anthony Joshua, as examples of the strong human connection between both nations.
The Nigerian leader reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in areas of security, trade, and development. He also expressed optimism about ongoing collaboration through the Commonwealth of Nations.

Tinubu is expected to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to further deepen cooperation, especially in addressing regional security challenges in West Africa.
He concluded his remarks by raising a toast to the enduring friendship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, expressing confidence in a future defined by partnership, mutual respect, and shared prosperity.
