Tinubu Honoured as FG Renames Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

….Approves Major Road Expansion

The Federal Government has officially renamed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway, citing the President’s long-standing vision for the landmark infrastructure project.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the decision during a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, where he also revealed that President Tinubu had approved a 400-kilometre extension of the Fourth Legacy Highway, alongside the reconstruction of key sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Umahi explained that the Ministry of Works reached the decision after consultations with its leadership, describing it as a fitting tribute to Tinubu’s commitment to the coastal highway project.

According to the minister, Tinubu first conceived the idea nearly 27 years ago while serving as Governor of Lagos State, noting that the President had not only envisioned the project but also brought it to reality.

He described the first phase of the 750-kilometre highway—from Victoria Island to Lekki—as a major engineering achievement. The 47.47-kilometre, six-lane carriageway includes a 25-metre median reserved for a future railway line, underscoring its long-term transport planning.

Umahi further disclosed that President Tinubu had approved the expansion of the Fourth Legacy Highway by an additional 400 kilometres, increasing its total length from 700 kilometres to 1,100 kilometres. The highway, initially planned to connect Akwanga in Nasarawa State to Maiduguri in Borno State through Jos, Bauchi, Gombe and Biu, will now extend into Taraba State.

The minister described the expansion as unprecedented, saying it would significantly enhance connectivity across the northern corridor.

In addition, Tinubu approved the dualisation of another 400 kilometres of the East-West Road, the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway using reinforced concrete pavement, the completion of the long-abandoned Ibi Bridge in Taraba State, and the construction of the 5.76-kilometre Lao Bridge.

Umahi said the approvals reflect the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening road infrastructure, improving transportation networks, boosting economic growth and accelerating national development through strategic investments in critical projects.
