Tinubu Hails Troops Over Killing of Bandit Leader Ibrahim Bastuji
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for a successful operation in Kogi State that led to the neutralisation of notorious bandit kingpin, Ibrahim Bastuji, as well as the rescue of the widow of a late senior military officer.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 16, 2026, the President praised the bravery and coordination of the troops, describing the operation as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing fight against violent criminal networks operating in Kogi and neighbouring states.
He said Bastuji had long terrorised communities through kidnapping, armed attacks and other violent crimes, adding that his elimination would restore confidence among residents and weaken criminal elements in the region.
“I congratulate our gallant troops on this decisive milestone. Nigeria will not surrender any part of its territory to criminals. Those who choose the path of violence against innocent citizens will find no hiding place,” President Tinubu said.
The President also applauded the security forces for a separate rescue operation that led to the safe recovery of Hajiya Amina Rabe Abubakar, widow of the late former Chief of Defence Information, Rabe Abubakar.
He described the rescue as a demonstration of professionalism, intelligence coordination, and the commitment of the armed forces to protecting citizens.
“The safe return of Hajiya Amina Rabe Abubakar is a source of relief to her family and to all Nigerians. I commend the intelligence coordination and bravery of the officers and men who executed the rescue operation,” he added.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of the military and other security agencies with improved funding, training, and equipment to end banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across the country. He also urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information.
The statement was signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
