Tinubu Backs Nationwide Rollout of CNG, Electric Vehicles to Cut Transport Costs

The Executive Chairman, Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, PCNGI, Barrister Ismaeel Ahmed has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is pushing forward with plans for the nationwide rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles (EV) as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and expand alternative energy use in Nigeria.

Ahmed disclosed this after a meeting with the President at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, where discussions centred on the implementation strategy for the initiative.

According to him, the immediate plan includes deploying 100,000 vehicle conversion kits to enable vehicles run on CNG, establishing about 25 additional refuelling stations across the country, and rolling out hundreds of buses and thousands of tricycles powered by alternative fuels.

He also noted that the programme would include the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure nationwide to support the gradual transition to electric mobility.

Ahmed explained that the measures are aimed at rapidly expanding the availability of alternative fuels for transportation while also strengthening the domestic market for gas and electric vehicles.

During the meeting, President Tinubu reiterated that reducing transportation costs for Nigerians remains a key priority of his administration.

He also emphasised the importance of growing the gas and electric vehicle sector as part of broader efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions in the country.

Ahmed further briefed the President on the progress being made to ensure the rollout is coordinated and sustainable, with the necessary infrastructure being developed to support the expansion of CNG and electric vehicle adoption across Nigeria.
