Tensions Escalate in Kano After Attack on Emir Sanusi’s Palace

Renewed unrest has erupted in Kano following an audacious attack on Gidan Rumfa, the official residence of reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The assault, allegedly carried out by supporters of the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, occurred on Sunday.

According to the Kano Emirate’s media team, the assailants forcefully breached the main gate of the palace, injuring security personnel and damaging police vehicles stationed on the premises.

The incident reportedly unfolded shortly after Bayero returned from a condolence visit. Eyewitnesses noted that instead of taking the usual Koki–Nassarawa route, he passed through Emir Palace Road—a move perceived by many as provocative. Locals also recalled a similar episode in which Bayero used the same route after visiting his Mandawari residence, interpreting it as a deliberate attempt to incite unrest.

Since his removal, Bayero has taken up residence at the Nassarawa Palace without official approval from the Kano State Government. Though he has not legally challenged his dethronement, his continued conduct as though still reigning has deepened divisions within the city.

The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains resolute in its support for Sanusi II, who reclaimed the throne with widespread backing from the Kano Emirate Council. Of the 38 District Heads across the state, 37 have pledged loyalty to Sanusi, with only one—Bayero’s brother—yet to recognize his authority.

Further cementing Sanusi’s position, the newly appointed Village Head of Ganduje—who is a nephew of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje—was officially turbaned by the reinstated Emir himself.
