Special FEC Session Deferred as Nation Prepares for Buhari’s Burial in Daura
The Federal Executive Council’s planned special session to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has been postponed due to preparations for his state burial, which will take place in his hometown of Daura on Tuesday.
This development was confirmed in a statement issued Monday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who noted that the federal government has also declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday to mark the passing of the former leader.
According to Onanuga, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will communicate a rescheduled date for the special FEC session once funeral proceedings conclude.
President Bola Tinubu had convened the session to formally acknowledge Buhari’s contributions to national development. However, the focus has now shifted to ensuring a dignified farewell for the late statesman, whose body is expected to arrive in Nigeria from London by noon on Tuesday.
Buhari will be laid to rest in Daura later that day in line with Islamic rites. He passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness.
In addition to ordering national flags to fly at half-mast for seven days, President Tinubu has sent Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to London to console the bereaved family and accompany the remains back to Nigeria.
