Senator Natasha sparks another controversy, snubs Akpabio, Mace

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan sparked controversy on Thursday by refusing to stand up in deference to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Mace, a symbol of legislative authority, as he entered the Senate Chamber.

According to legislative convention, all members must rise when the Sergeant-at-arms escorts the Senate President into the chamber, chanting “Mr. President!” at intervals.

However, Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has publicly feuded with Akpabio, chose not to follow this protocol.

The Senate responded strongly, advising Akpoti-Uduaghan to respect and obey the institution’s rules and orders.

Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno emphasized that all senators must stand up when the Senate President enters the chamber, citing Order 55(1).

He expressed regret over Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions on Wednesday and Thursday, urging her to abide by the rules and protect the institution at all costs. Senate President Akpabio sustained the order, advising all senators to be guided accordingly.
