Senate President’s office denies fake quote attributed to Akpabio, warns against online misinformation
The Office of the President of the Senate has dismissed as false and malicious a social media post circulating online that attributes a controversial statement to Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
In a statement issued on Sunday, November 2, 2025, and signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President’s office described the post — published by a platform known as Rant HQ — as a “completely fabricated and mischievous attempt” to cause diplomatic misunderstanding between Nigeria and the United States.
The post in question claimed that Senator Akpabio said, “The killing is taking place in Nigeria not in USA, Trump should focus on US. Nigerians are not complaining about the killings, we are fully satisfied with the condition of Nigeria.”
Eyiboh, however, said the statement was “a total falsehood” and “a product of digital recklessness,” stressing that Akpabio never made such remarks — publicly, privately, in writing, or in conversation.
“We challenge the publishers of this falsehood to produce a single shred of evidence to the contrary,” the statement read.
The Senate President’s office further noted that the image accompanying the fake post — showing Akpabio at an official event with other senators — was deliberately used to give false credibility to a fabricated quote.
Reaffirming Akpabio’s commitment to diplomacy and mutual respect among nations, Eyiboh described the Senate President as a “statesman of global repute” who holds former U.S. President Donald Trump in high regard and would never comment on internal U.S. matters.
He condemned the post as a deliberate attempt to “tarnish reputations, inflame diplomatic sentiments, and mislead the public,” urging Nigerians to disregard it entirely.
“Freedom of expression is not freedom to lie,” Eyiboh cautioned, warning Rant HQ and similar platforms against peddling unverified stories for online traffic.
The statement concluded by reaffirming that the Office of the Senate President remains committed to truth, transparency, and responsible communication at all times.
