Senate President Calls for Global Action on Peace and Justice at IPU Assembly

The President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has urged parliaments worldwide to rise as defenders of peace, justice, and humanity, during his address at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Speaking under the theme, “Nurturing Hope, Securing Peace and Ensuring Justice for Future Generations,” the Senate President said the meeting comes at a time of increasing global tensions, with conflicts spreading across regions and challenging the stability of nations and institutions.

He conveyed greetings from the people of Nigeria, describing the country as one that understands that peace must be built, defended, and sustained. Drawing from Nigeria’s experience, he emphasized the critical role of legislatures as “the first hope of the masses” and “the conscience of the people.”

The Senate President warned that no part of the world is immune to instability, citing conflicts across the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, and called for a shift from destruction to development by redirecting resources from war to nation-building.

He also highlighted the human cost of conflict, noting that behind casualty figures are broken families and devastated communities. Stressing the need for responsible leadership, he said justice must not be defined by power, adding that the global crisis is not only about security but also about leadership.

He further urged the IPU to strengthen global institutions, particularly the United Nations, and to amplify the voices of vulnerable nations.

In conclusion, he called for renewed global commitment, describing the moment as a turning point and a “covenant with posterity” to secure a future anchored on hope, peace, and justice. Nigeria, he affirmed, remains ready to collaborate with the international community toward achieving these goals.

Earlier, IPU President Tulia Ackson called on member parliaments to uphold democratic responsibilities, strengthen international solidarity, and act decisively in addressing rising conflicts and inequalities worldwide.

The statement was issued by Rt. Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, mnipr, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity Office of the President of the Senate.
