Senate confirms appointment of board members for NDIC, law reform commission

The Nigerian senate has confirmed the appointment of 2 non-executive directors for the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) and 3 members on the Board of Nigerian Law Reform Commission.
This was disclosed through some tweet posts on the official Twitter handle of the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, June 9, 2020.
Those confirmed as non-executive directors for NDIC are Mrs. Diana Okonta who is representing the South-South region and Mrs. Ya’ana Talib Yaro, who represents the North-East region.
Also, the confirmed Board members for Nigerian Law Reform Commission are Professor Jummai A.M. Audi (North-Central) as the Chairman, Bassey Dan-Abia (South-South) as a commissioner and Mohammed Ibraheem (South West) as a commissioner.
The Senate, however, deferred the confirmation of Ebele Chima, one of the nominees for the Nigerian Law Reform Commission on the recommendation of the screening following his inability to appear before the committee.
The appointment of these nominees was confirmed by the Nigerian senate following the report of the Committee on Banking, Insurance and other financial institutions headed by Senator Uba Sani and the committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal matters which is headed by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.
Opeyemi said that the committee after screening the nominees made the following findings; that the appointment of the nominees satisfies the relevant laws, that they possess the requisite qualifications, that there was no petition or adverse report against the nominees, that the committee is satisfied as to their experience, suitability, competence, requisite knowledge and that the nominees are fit and proper persons for the appointment.

He said that President Buhari made the appointments pursuant to section 2 (1) and (2) of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act.
For the NDIC board member’s confirmation, Senator Uba Sani said that their nominations are to fill the vacuum in the NDIC, that they are conversant with the workings of the NDIC, that there was no petition against their nomination and were both cleared by the security agencies.
