Security Is Foundation of Prosperity, Fubara Tells Nigerians as Army Marks 2026 Celebration
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that security remains the bedrock of national prosperity, stressing that no society can achieve sustainable development without peace, stability and the sacrifices of its armed forces.
Speaking at the gala night of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration in Port Harcourt on Sunday, the governor commended the Nigerian Army for its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and preserving peace despite evolving security threats.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, Fubara said the nation’s economic and democratic progress depended largely on the courage and professionalism of military personnel.
“Security remains the vital foundation of any prosperous society, and a nation sleeps in peace because brave men and women stand awake in its defence,” he said.
The governor paid tribute to fallen soldiers, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices continue to safeguard Nigeria’s unity, democracy and sovereignty.
“We honour those who have paid the ultimate price and stand in solidarity with the families they left behind. Their sacrifices continue to preserve our nation’s unity, protect our territorial integrity, and sustain our democracy,” he added.
Fubara also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, saying the partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Army’s 6 Division has enhanced security and created a more conducive environment for economic activities in the state.
He said the improved security situation has enabled residents to go about their daily lives with greater confidence while boosting investment and development.
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the annual Nigerian Army Day Celebration was not only an occasion to celebrate the service and sacrifices of soldiers but also an opportunity to deepen civil-military relations and execute impactful community development projects.
He disclosed that the Army had renovated community secondary schools and installed solar-powered boreholes in parts of Rivers State as part of activities marking the celebration.
Shaibu stressed that sustainable national security could only be achieved through close collaboration between the military, other security agencies and the civilian population.
“As an Army, we recognize the indispensable role of the people in supporting our efforts to achieve national security objectives within a joint, multifaceted, and dynamic security environment. Enduring security can only be achieved through a strong partnership between the military, other security agencies, and the communities we are sworn to protect,” he said.
The Army Chief assured Nigerians that the military would continue to combine kinetic and non-kinetic approaches in tackling insecurity while working closely with intelligence agencies and local communities to create a safe environment for socio-economic development.
He also thanked the Rivers State Government and residents for their continued support, urging Nigerians to maintain confidence in the Armed Forces and contribute to efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and national stability.
The gala night, attended by senior military officers, government officials and other dignitaries, featured cultural performances by the Rivers State Cultural Troupe as well as musical entertainment by popular artistes Mr P and Duncan Mighty, bringing the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration to a colourful close.
