PDP remains resilient and relevant — Jonathan

Former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, has dismissed claims suggesting that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is weakened, affirming that the party remains vibrant, resilient, and firmly rooted in Nigeria’s democratic system.

Jonathan described the PDP as a cornerstone of the nation’s democracy, noting that it is the only original political party formed in 1998 that is still in existence. He made this assertion while hosting members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by National Chairman Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, at a consultative meeting held Tuesday evening, January 6, 2026, at his private office in Abuja.

The former president explained that the PDP’s longevity and institutional depth position it to surmount its current internal challenges. He emphasized that the party transcends ordinary political organization, describing it as a national institution with a proven record of democratic contribution.

“The PDP has played a critical role in Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999. I personally benefitted from the opportunities the party provided, serving at various levels from Deputy Governor to President. I remain grateful and feel a strong sense of obligation to continue supporting the party,” Jonathan said.

He urged party leaders to prioritize national interest and institutional strengthening over individual ambitions, stressing that stable democracies depend on strong and principled political parties.

The meeting centered on ongoing reconciliation efforts and strategic repositioning of the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In his remarks, Dr. Turaki expressed appreciation to Jonathan for his guidance and enduring commitment to the party. He assured the former president that the current leadership is pursuing a comprehensive “Rebirth Agenda” aimed at restoring unity and repositioning the PDP for electoral success.

“Our visit is to seek your counsel and to update you on the party’s direction. We are engaging aggrieved members because a united PDP remains the most credible platform to return power to the people and deliver a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria,” Turaki said.

The delegation included former Niger State Governor Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, Hajiya Zainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, alongside other members of the National Working Committee.
