COAS Engages Babangida, Abdulsalami, Niger Govt on Enhanced Security Partnership
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has undertaken a series of courtesy visits to former Heads of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, alongside engagements with the Niger State Government, in a renewed push to strengthen civil–military relations and Nigeria’s security framework.
The visits, held on Tuesday in Minna, reflected the Nigerian Army’s resolve to deepen cooperation with political leaders and state authorities as part of broader efforts to respond effectively to emerging security threats
During the meetings, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu briefed the elder statesmen and state officials on key reforms and initiatives being implemented by the Army to boost training standards, improve doctrine and enhance operational readiness across formations nationwide.

He noted that ongoing exercises across Army training institutions were structured to deliver practical, mission-focused training, while simultaneously testing the preparedness and deployment posture of combat units.
According to him, the exercises are also intended to reveal operational shortfalls that may necessitate the reinforcement of existing units through additional troop deployments or the creation of new formations.

Highlighting Niger State’s strategic relevance, the Army chief described the state as a critical security hub due to its expansive landmass and central geographical position.
“We are harnessing all available resources and applying technology to tackle security challenges more effectively. Niger State is particularly significant to us. I once served here as a Training and Doctrine Commander, and many senior officers have strong ties to the state.

“In many respects, it feels like home,” Shaibu said.
He further revealed that he had carried out operational assessments of the 31st, 11th and 18th Brigades in Bida, aimed at identifying gaps and providing the necessary support to address recent security concerns in parts of the state.
The COAS explained that the visits were designed to ensure that troops on the ground are properly equipped, well-positioned and capable of responding promptly to evolving threats.
In their remarks, Gen. Babangida and Gen. Abdulsalami welcomed the Army chief and praised his leadership style, describing him as a seasoned professional with extensive operational experience and a clear strategic vision for the Nigerian Army.
They commended the Army for maintaining professionalism amid Nigeria’s complex security environment and congratulated Lt.-Gen. Shaibu on his appointment.
Both former leaders also offered prayers for guidance and success, urging him to continue to place emphasis on training, discipline and the welfare of personnel as he steers the Army through contemporary security challenges.
