PDP Board of Trustees calls for postponement of National Convention, elects new Chairman and Secretary

The newly reconstituted Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the postponement of the Party’s forthcoming National Convention, pending the determination of an appeal at the Court of Appeal on the recent Federal High Court judgment.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its inaugural and emergency meeting held on Friday in Abuja, the BoT said prudence and respect for judicial processes demanded that the convention be deferred until the appellate court delivers its verdict.

The Board, under the new leadership of Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as Chairman and Hon. Isah Dansidi as Secretary, deliberated extensively on recent developments within the Party, especially the implications of the landmark Federal High Court judgment of October 31, 2025, and the preparations for the National Convention.

The BoT reaffirmed that the PDP remains “one indivisible, united, and democratic family” committed to justice, equity, and progress. It also expressed confidence in ongoing efforts to restore internal order and constitutional adherence in line with the court’s ruling.

The communiqué directed all organs and officers of the Party to ensure full and immediate compliance with the judgment, commending the Judiciary for its courage and professionalism in upholding constitutional principles, the Electoral Act, INEC guidelines, and the PDP Constitution.

On the leadership of the Board, the BoT noted that its immediate past Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and Secretary, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, could no longer continue in their roles, having publicly taken sides in the Party’s internal crisis. The Board thanked them for their past services and wished them well.

The new leadership, the communiqué stated, will serve as the “conscience and stabilizing moral compass” of the PDP, pledging to promote fairness, justice, inclusiveness, and harmony within the Party.

The BoT further cautioned that no organ or process of the Party should act in contempt of court or outside constitutional provisions, stressing that such actions would render outcomes null and void.

It also commended all PDP stakeholders for their resilience and continued faith in the Party despite recent challenges and urged members to continue acting with maturity and mutual respect.

The statement concluded with a call for unity and constitutionalism as the Party prepares for its National Convention, affirming the BoT’s resolve to “uphold its sacred responsibility as the conscience of the PDP—speaking truth with fairness, guiding with integrity, and ensuring that our great Party remains a beacon of democracy and hope for the nation.”
