Osun Commissioner Calls For Resuscitation of Yoruba Culture

By ABIODUN JIMOH

Worried by the dwindling fortune of Yoruba culture, State of Osun Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Obawale Adebisi has called for its resuscitation to avoid going into extinction.

Hon. Adebisi expressed this during meeting with Management and Local Government Executive of Forum of Social
Development in the state, held in his office, Osogbo on Thursday.

The commissioner said: “The dying Yoruba Culture must be resuscitated in order for it not to go into extinction. Yoruba Culture such as food, music among others is gradually dying and if care is not taken, it will become a thing of the past.”

He therefore urged all the participants to ensure that the dying cultures were resuscitated. He added that having Cultural Officers in both public and private primary and secondary schools in the state will be an advantage to reviving cultural values in schools.

Furthermore, Hon. Obawale noted that if cultural activities are well managed, it will increase the internally generated revenue of the state. “We want to look for a way to translate all cultural activities to wealth in the State of Osun.”

Speaking at the meeting, the Coordinating Director in the Ministry, Mr. Samuel Adeniyi stated that religion and culture are not the same, adding that, the negative impression people had about our culture is killing it. He hereby charged all stakeholders to embark on sensitising
the people on the importance of Yoruba culture.

Mrs Solagbade Motunrayo from
Ifelodun local government while speaking on behalf of the Forum pledged their support for the commissioner and the ministry in order to ensure that the cultures are resuscitated in the state.
