Oro Festival Rites: LASU Issues Safety Advisory

Lagos State University (LASU) has issued a notice to its staff and students regarding the commencement of the annual Oro festival rites, as declared by His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Sulaimon Adeshina Raji-Ashade, the Oniba of Iba. The rites, organized in conjunction with the elders of the Iba community, will be observed during daytime hours and on workdays.

According to an official statement signed by Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, the festival will span nine days, with specific observances scheduled for Monday, August 25, and Friday, August 29, 2025, between 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

In response, the university has provided guidelines to ensure the safety of community members, particularly those residing in Iba and nearby areas, during the specified hours. The advisory is especially pertinent as the ongoing examination period, which began on August 18, coincides with the festival.

The university management has directed the following:

  1. Avoid Movement: Staff and students are advised to limit movement within the Iba community during the Oro rites hours (9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.).
  2. Adjust Schedules: All academic, administrative, and personal activities should be planned outside the affected timeframe.
  3. Stay Cautious: Members of the university are urged to remain law-abiding and adhere strictly to these directives.

LASU emphasized its commitment to the safety and welfare of its community and encouraged full cooperation throughout the festival period. For further details, the Palace of the Oniba of Iba remains available for inquiries.
