By ABIODUN JIMOH, ABEOKUTA
Goods worth hundreds of millions naira were recovered by the Ogun State Police Command from suspected criminals who specialised in hijacking goods from unsuspecting owners and drivers on highways within the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Bashir D Makama, narrated this on Tuesday when parading eight suspects, that is seven men and a woman at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), office, Magbon, Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
Barely 24 hours to his exit from the state as the commissioner, the CP while addressing journalists noted that the timely intervention of his men salvaged the situation and led to the recovery of these goods and items from the daredevil armed robbers and hijackers who specialised in dispossessing of businessmen of their hard earned goods.
He remarked that the suspects whose expertise were into hijacking of special goods and products were arrested in various parts of the state after they committed the crime along Sagamu-Ore expressway in the last two weeks.
He narrated: “This is one of our outreaches to the media and to also tell people and read out our scorecards as it concerns the state command for a period covering two weeks.
“As we are all aware this is the ember period and we have commenced our operation with a view to ensure total clampdown on criminals and other forms of criminality in continuation of operation Puff Arder. We have sectorised the state both on the highways, the townships, and criminal prone areas that have been given us concerns. We have gotten results from our men activities statewide.
“In this place, we have four different cases here. One being a grandmother who decided to sniff out life out of her two day old grandchild simply because she does not like the face of her son-inlaw, either his face or his parent, that one is known to her inner self.
“From nowhere, she was giving the baby to feed, but decided to feed her with poison, and the baby ultimately died. And because of that she was arrested for infanticide. Two days old baby, we all know how painful that is for the parent, and it is not a good thing that we can leave with them, let the law takes it course. And at the end of the day justice should prevail and serve as deterrent to others.
“The second case is the set of armed robbers who specialised in stopping and hijacking of trucks with containers and its content. This time they ran into a truck loaded with vehicle spare parts sometime on November 22nd, they hijacked this truck fully loaded along Benin-Ore expressway.
“The timely intervention of men of SARS intimated and moved in and arrested two of them with the truck and goods recovered. The owners are here to tell us how they fell victim, and about how they were able to identify their goods.
“The third case is about armed robbers arrested with two locally made cut to size guns and nine rounds of live ammunition. This has become a daily routine in our mop up exercise of illegal ammunitions in the society, and we are still on it.
“Despite the state government amnesty programme for those who are in possession of ammunition in which voluntary return attracts appreciation, but failure attracts punishment. The command has taken the decisions and those arrested will face the full wrath of law as it demands.
“The fourth case is that of hijacking different goods. These hijackers have their area of specialization by dispossessing owners of their goods. Many of them know what they want, be it spare parts, petroleum products and many others.
“But the case of these ones was that they hijacked a petroleum products along Sagamu-Ore expressway, and in the process again, and on tip off, and sharing of information, they were arrested.
“The operations cannot function without sharing of information by the people including the pressmen, by availing us little information, based on that the items have been recovered and the owners will come and collect their items.
“And the suspects will face the wrath of the law. They are here for more interview by the press. This is a continuous activities to ensure that the state is rip-off of any forms of criminality and criminals that might want to disrupt the peace of the citizens.”
Meanwhile, many of the suspects in an interview confessed to have involved in the crime they were being paraded, as they hereby pleaded for mercy, while attributing their acts to the handiwork of devil and peer groups.
