Ogun Lawmakers Task Abiodun On Security, Peace Summit To Address Border Towns Killings
By ABIODUN JIMOH, ABEOKUTA.
The excesses of some security agencies in the border communities in Ogun State will soon become a thing of the past as the state lawmakers have called on Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to as a matter of urgency convey a security and peace summit to curb the incessant killings of innocent residents in border towns.
The lawmakers called for this during plenary session whereby they unanimously passed a resolution calling on the state governor that such move would address the menace.
The passage of the resolution followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, who represents Ado-Odo/Ota I State Constituency, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by his counterpart from Egbado South, Bolanle Ajayi and supported by other lawmakers through a voice vote.
The resolution urged the governor to convey the summit on the killings in the border towns to comprise all security formations, traditional rulers, youth, market men and women as well as other stakeholders amongst others in the border areas.
This is to find a lasting solution to the extra-judicial killings being carried out by some security operatives, especially the officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service in the area, who were reported to have been physically assaulting local traders under the guise of their duty of checkmating smugglers.
The lawmakers revealed that it was worrisome to note that the customs men often seized farm produces like maize and tomatoes in the guise of arresting contraband goods.
It would be recalled that the lawmakers at the previous plenary condemned the incessant attacks and extra judicial killings of law abiding citizens by the men and officers of customs with a call on the state government to immediately convey a stakeholders’ meeting on security.
Especially to address the rising cases of overzealousness on the part of the officers and men of the Nigeria customs in border areas of the state.
Earlier, a member representing Egbado North II State Constituency, Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju, intimated the Assembly on the alleged unprofessional activities of the men of customs in some parts of his constituency.
