Obasanjo: Nigeria’s Real Challenge Lies with Those Running the Constitution, Not the Document Itself

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that Nigeria’s core issues stem more from the individuals managing the constitution than the constitution itself.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the National Summit, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and read at the ongoing National Summit on the Future of Nigeria’s Constitutional Democracy in Abuja, Obasanjo stressed that while constitutional reforms are important, the nation’s well-being hinges largely on those entrusted with implementing the laws.

According to the former president, “A constitution must reflect the history, composition, and aspirations of the people it serves, and while ours may have areas requiring amendments, no constitution is ever flawless. The real issue is how it is applied.”

Obasanjo argued that even a well-drafted constitution could be rendered ineffective in the hands of those lacking integrity or commitment to the public good. He warned that without a change in leadership style and values, amending the constitution would make little difference.

“I’m more concerned about the conduct of those who operate the constitution. Good governance and prioritising citizens’ welfare must come from them,” he said.

He added, “For over 15 years, if those managing the constitution remain the same—engaging in selfishness, corruption, impunity, and disregarding constitutional principles and moral standards—Nigerians will continue to suffer.”

Obasanjo concluded by urging that attention be focused on ensuring the right people are in positions of leadership, noting that such individuals would be better positioned to drive constitutional reforms that genuinely reflect the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
