NUJ Applauds DSS for Swift Release of Journalists
….reaffirms Need to Protect Press Freedom
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for the prompt release of two journalists, Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang, of Jay 101.9 FM, Jos, Plateau State, who were recently detained while covering the funeral of the late mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe.
The journalists were reportedly arrested over a video report posted on social media that captured an altercation between a cleric and security operatives at the event.
Their detention drew widespread concern within the media community, as it posed a serious threat to press freedom and the right of journalists to carry out their legitimate duties.
The commendation was made by the National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Alhassan Yahya ABDULLAHI in a statement released on Sunday.
The Union, however, expressed satisfaction with the intervention of the DSS Director-General, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, who promptly ordered their release, personally contacted the NUJ to express his regret over the incident, and directed that DSS operatives must ensure proper investigation precedes any arrest.
According to the NUJ, this action demonstrates a welcome and commendable change in the operational culture of the security agency. The willingness of the DSS leadership to acknowledge mistakes, offer apologies, and commit to reform signifies progress toward building greater public trust and accountability.
The Union called on the DSS to maintain this renewed approach by upholding the rights of journalists and other citizens in all circumstances. It emphasised that press freedom remains a cornerstone of democracy, and journalists must never be victimised for performing their lawful responsibilities.
While welcoming this positive development, the NUJ also urged the DSS and other security agencies to institutionalise accountability by disciplining officers whose conduct undermines democratic principles and citizens’ rights. Sustained internal discipline, it said, is key to preserving such progress.
The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to continuous collaboration with security institutions to deepen understanding, enhance professionalism, and protect both national security and media freedom.
It also encouraged journalists nationwide to remain steadfast, ethical, and courageous in carrying out their duties.
