NNPC Launches Cawthorne Crude, Exports First Cargo to Netherlands
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has officially introduced a new crude oil grade, Cawthorne, into the global market, marking a major step in Nigeria’s drive to boost production and diversify its export portfolio.
The company confirmed that the maiden cargo of the Cawthorne blend was exported on Sunday, April 5, 2026, aboard the MT Eburones vessel to the Netherlands. The shipment, estimated at 950,000 barrels, represents the commercial debut of the new crude stream.
Cawthorne crude, classified as a light and sweet grade with an API gravity of 36.4, is comparable to Nigeria’s premium Bonny Light and is expected to attract strong demand in international markets due to its high petrol and diesel yield.
The crude was lifted through the Cawthorne Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel, located offshore Bonny in Rivers State. The facility enhances crude evacuation from OML 18, improving export efficiency and strengthening supply reliability.
According to NNPC Ltd, the development aligns with its broader strategy to increase crude oil production and expand globally competitive export streams, while supporting the Federal Government’s target of reaching three million barrels per day in oil production and 12 billion cubic feet of gas output by 2030.
The launch of the Cawthorne grade follows recent additions such as Nembe and Utapate, reflecting a sustained effort to optimise production and reinforce Nigeria’s position in the global crude oil market.
Commenting on the milestone, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, commended the policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the collaboration of stakeholders, including the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission and OML 18 partners.
Ojulari said the export of the new crude grade reflects a deliberate strategy focused on execution, partnership, and value creation, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s standing as a reliable global energy supplier.
The statement was issued by Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd.
