NIS Games: Delta command beats Zonal team by a lone goal

Delta State Command football team of the Nigeria Immigration Service proved superiority over their counterpart, Zone G Command in the football contest by a lone goal.

The football event was one the sporting events lined up at the maiden edition of the Nigeria Immigration Sports Festival holding at the Benin Zonal Headquarters, whereby teams from Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Enugu and Anambra Commands are participating at the games.

The tension soaked match saw the Delta Team dominated the play, but could not convert any of their several chances before the referee signal the end the first half of the game.

However, on resumption of the second half, the Zone G Team tried to put themselves back into the game by making deft moves at their opponent’s goal area. But none of the moves resorted into goal before they conceded an own goal from mounting pressure from the superior tackles from the Delta Command.

Speaking at the pre-match ceremony, the Assistant Controller-General (ACG) Zone G Command, Justina Ahmadu, spoke on the essence of the sports festival for the zone.

She explained that it was designed to keep the officers and men of the service fit, and would provide the opportunity to select the best in all fields of sport to represent the Zone at its forth-coming Nigeria Immigration Games slated for Abuja later this year.

The ACG said: “The essence of the games which include volleyball, basketball, table-tennis, badminton, scrabble, tennis, chess etc, was expected to increase both the mental and physical alertness of participating officers for better performance in their assigned duties.”

She used the occasion to advice the participants in the various sporting events to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the games, just as she urged the officiating team to ensure fairness in their decisions.
