Nigerian passports set for global recognition through ICAO PKD integration -FG

Federal Government has disclosed that Nigerian passports will now receive increased acknowledgement at international borders following the integration into the International Civil Aviation Organization Public Key Directory and Public Key Infrastructure.

The FG, share this development via the Ministry of Interior on the X platform, responded to a tweet from a travel content creator, Tayo Aina, on Tuesday.

Aina had recently created a promotional video showcasing a St. Kitts passport, which he obtained for $150,000, while expressing concerns about using his Nigerian passport for global travel.

However, the video received criticism from online users who reprimanded Aina for belittling Nigeria’s passport in favor of promoting another country’s passport.

Shortly after, the travel creator issued a public apology, retracting his previous comments about the Nigerian passport.

He stated, “I apologize for my earlier remarks. This passport doesn’t just facilitate travel; it confers global citizenship, granting visa-free entry to over 149 nations, unlocking a myriad of opportunities.

“Border control officers worldwide recognize its value, offering VIP treatment upon presentation at any airport globally. Its worth is immeasurable.”

Meanwhile, in response to his tweet, the Ministry of Interior affirmed, “Nigerians can now look forward to seamless and secure travels as the Nigerian passport has been integrated into the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD) and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

“The ICAO PKD and PKI systems ensure secure verification of data stored in electronic passports, including biometric details, against trusted sources.

“This integration enhances the efficiency of verifying Nigerian passports at international borders, reducing processing delays and bolstering security,” the statement added.

Further investigations confirmed Nigeria’s membership in the ICAO PKD program.

The advantages for PKD members include streamlined validation of ePassports, faster multilateral data exchanges surpassing bilateral diplomatic channels, heightened respect for citizens at foreign border crossings, reduced chances of document forgery through prompt detection of compromised or falsified chips, and eased border crossings for e-Passport holders.
