Nigerian Navy Hands Over Suspected Militant Collaborator to DSS in Cross River Crackdown

The Nigerian Navy has handed over a suspected militant collaborator to the Department of State Services (DSS) in Cross River State as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the Calabar waterways.

The suspect, identified as Ubong Clement, was arrested by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory stationed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the arrest resulted from sustained intelligence-driven operations targeted at militancy and other criminal activities in the area.

Preliminary investigations allegedly revealed that Clement maintained regular contact with members of militant groups operating around the Dayspring Island axis and engaged in activities that compromised ongoing security operations.

The Navy further disclosed that intelligence linked the suspect to a notorious militant identified as Steven Joseph, also known as “Juju,” who has been associated with criminal activities along the waterways.

Investigators also alleged that the suspect served as a channel for disposing of goods stolen from market boats intercepted by militants. Proceeds from the sale of the stolen items were reportedly remitted to the militant group, providing financial and logistical support for its operations.

Following the completion of preliminary investigations, the Nigerian Navy handed the suspect over to the DSS Calabar Command for further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.

The Navy said the development highlights its resolve not only to apprehend individuals directly involved in militancy but also to dismantle the support networks sustaining criminal activities within the maritime environment.

It reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations, community engagement and targeted security actions aimed at ensuring lasting peace and security across the Calabar waterways and surrounding communities.
