Breaking: Messi Becomes World Cup’s All-Time Leading Goalscorer
Argentina captain Lionel Messi has etched his name deeper into football history after becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history with 17 goals.
The reigning world champions’ skipper achieved the milestone on Monday when he scored against Austria, surpassing the previous record of 16 goals jointly held by himself and German legend Miroslav Klose.
Messi had drawn level with Klose’s long-standing record last week after producing a brilliant hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening match of the World Cup in North America.
The three goals took his tournament tally to 16, matching the mark set by Klose during his illustrious international career.
The latest strike against Austria moved the Argentine star clear at the top of the World Cup scoring charts, further cementing his status as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
Messi’s record-breaking achievement comes as Argentina continue their defence of the World Cup title, with the veteran forward once again playing a pivotal role in his nation’s campaign.
