Breaking: Kwankwaso Resigns from NNPP, Signals Political Realignment
A former Governor of Kano State and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the need for strategic political realignment.
In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso announced that his resignation takes immediate effect, bringing an end to his role as the party’s National Leader.
He described the decision as difficult, noting that he was grateful for the opportunity to serve the party at its highest levels, including flying its flag as presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections.

Kwankwaso, however, explained that recent developments in Nigeria’s political landscape necessitated a shift in alignment toward a platform he believes offers a better chance of delivering meaningful change.
“I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.
The former governor expressed appreciation to the NNPP leadership, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and other party structures nationwide.
He also acknowledged the support of members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, a political group strongly associated with his leadership.
Despite his exit, Kwankwaso emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among political actors committed to national development, expressing optimism about working with others to build a more prosperous Nigeria.
His resignation is expected to have significant implications for the evolving political landscape ahead of future elections.
