A senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Kogi State, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died under controversial circumstances during an alleged intimate encounter with a female student.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at a hotel in Anyigba and was later reported to the authorities by the hotel manager.
Confirming the incident in Lokoja on Friday, the spokesperson of the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Aya, described the case as unfortunate. He noted that an autopsy had been carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
According to the police, the hotel manager, Moses Friday, informed them that a 22-year-old, 200-level student of PAAU, Gloria Samuel, had rushed to the reception in distress, claiming that the lecturer had suddenly collapsed following their encounter.
Emergency services were contacted immediately, and Dr. Ibikunle was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing. The police confirmed that Gloria Samuel was initially detained and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further questioning.
A student familiar with the situation, who spoke anonymously, alleged that the lecturer was engaged in a sexual act with the student when he slumped. Dr. Ibikunle, a married man with children, had reportedly checked into the hotel earlier that day with the student, who belongs to the Department of Social Studies Education.
There are also unconfirmed reports suggesting that the lecturer may have consumed several energy drinks prior to the incident.
