Kefas’ defection to APC imminent as party finalises plans for grand reception
The political atmosphere in Taraba State is set for a major realignment as preparations gather momentum for Governor Agbu Kefas’ expected move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Reports indicate that the governor will officially join the ruling party on November 19.
A credible source within the APC’s National Working Committee revealed that national chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, played a key role in securing the defection, noting that arrangements have been completed for a welcoming rally in Jalingo.
Kefas’ planned switch was a major topic at the APC leadership meeting held Wednesday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, where insiders said the transition was already well underway.
“Everything is set for the Taraba governor’s entry into the APC,” the source confirmed.
The governor had earlier fuelled speculation during an address to APC and PDP stakeholders at the Banquet Hall of TY Danjuma House in Jalingo.
“I’m hearing the rumour too,” he said. “Sometimes when a rumour spreads persistently, it could mean something good. I am working to see that it becomes a reality. By God’s grace, in a few days after next week, you will hear from me.”
His remarks effectively validated weeks of speculation, prompting many of his supporters to signal their readiness to move with him.
Support for Kefas’ anticipated defection intensified over the weekend during a meeting at the Jalingo residence of Danladi Baido. APC leaders from across Taraba’s 16 LGAs and two development zones — including the state chairman, youth groups, concerned citizens, and party elders — pledged full backing.
According to The Guardian, they described the move as “timely” and “strategic,” predicting it would boost Taraba’s development through stronger federal ties, better infrastructure, and expanded economic opportunities.
Fintiri Also in Advanced Talks to Join APC
Meanwhile, the APC source disclosed that the party is close to securing another major political win as Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, is also preparing to leave the PDP.
“The defection of Governor Fintiri is already a settled matter. After Taraba, Adamawa is next,” the insider revealed.
If both governors switch camps, the political balance in the North-East could change significantly. The APC currently leads Borno, Gombe, and Yobe, while the PDP controls Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa.
