Jonathan to Supporters: Get Your Voter Cards Before Calling for 2027 Bid
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has challenged supporters urging him to contest the 2027 presidential election to first participate actively in the democratic process by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with youth groups and members of the Coalition for Jonathan 2027, Jonathan said many of those calling on him to return to office were not even registered voters.
“If I ask how many of you have your voter cards now, probably 50 per cent of you don’t even have your voter’s card. And you’re asking me to go and contest the election,” he told the gathering.
The former president stressed that nation-building depended on patriotic citizens who were willing to engage meaningfully in democracy rather than merely discussing politics.
According to him, credible and peaceful elections remain vital for attracting competent Nigerians into public service, warning that flawed electoral processes discourage responsible citizens from participating in politics.
Jonathan urged young Nigerians to continue advocating for peaceful polls, noting that stability and electoral credibility were necessary for the country’s democratic growth.
Drawing from his experience as an election observer across more than 14 African countries, he said strengthening democratic institutions on the continent remained important.
On growing calls for him to enter the 2027 presidential race, Jonathan said he had yet to make a decision but would consult widely before taking any step.
The Coalition for Jonathan 2027, led by Dr. Tom Ohikere, had earlier appealed to the former president to contest, arguing that Nigeria needed experienced leadership to tackle its current challenges.
