Jonathan evacuated from Guinea-Bissau after coup, arrives safely in Abuja

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been safely evacuated from Guinea-Bissau and is now back in the country following Wednesday’s military coup in the West African nation.

Jonathan, who had been in Guinea-Bissau for an official engagement, departed the country on Thursday after heightened political tension and reports of gunfire in the capital prompted an urgent evacuation. His aircraft touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where he was received by security officials.

The sudden escalation of unrest in Guinea-Bissau forced multiple diplomatic missions and international delegates to leave the country as the military seized control of key government institutions.

Jonathan, a leading figure in regional peace mediation efforts, has not yet issued a public statement on his evacuation, but sources say he is safe and in good health.

More details are expected as the situation in Guinea-Bissau continues to unfold.
