Journalist Against Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration (JAHTIM) have called for cooperation of all relevant stakeholders in the war against human trafficking and illegal migration in Nigeria.
According to the Femi Akinola, Executive Director of JAHTIM in a statement available to Daily Dispatch, stating that the organisation have decided to take up the challenge of creating necessary awareness as regards how not to fall victim of human trafficking nor embark on irregular migration that is filled with risks.
He urged the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking Persons (NAPTIP), National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCRMIDP), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) and the Nigerian Police to complement JAHTIM efforts towards eradicating human trafficking and irregular migration in Nigeria.
He said: “JAHTIM is a body of practising Journalists. It is a Nigeria based initiative against human trafficking and to promote safe migration among Nigerians having noted that human trafficking network continue to be the main driver of irregular migration in the country.
“We care to let Nigerians know that migration through the back door including sponsorship by human traffickers may lead to regret while abroad. The only way to avoid being subjected to physical and psychological torture is to migrate overseas through the normal channel.
“The body came into existence following continuous trafficking of Nigerian citizens- men, women, boys, girls and children to Europe and other parts of the world where they were being subjected to different kinds of inhuman treatment like bullying, arbitrary detention, untimely death, deliberate killing, sex exploitation, cheap labour, torture, maid servant, rape and others.
“It is to ensure Nigerians engage in safe migration not subjected to any type of inhuman treatment anywhere overseas or venture into asylum camps where inmates live solitary life.
“Our activities will involve monitoring and reporting life and living of Nigerian migrants abroad, focus more on activities of those that were in asylum camps, those living illegally including those that got stranded in places like Libya, East Europe and in Arabian countries.
“Also, to report living conditions of repatriated Nigerians particularly those deported from Libya. Our mission is to ensure human trafficking and irregular migration is kicked out of Nigeria.”
