Bill To Halt Politicians To Head Government Agencies Underway-Senator

A bill to halt the appointment of politicians to head Federal Government agencies and parastatals ahead of career civil servants is being proposed by the Senate.

The Bill, titled Public Service Efficiency Bill, is designed to allow civil servants head government agencies and parastatals.

“Bringing people from outside to head government agencies and parastatals had done more harm than good to the system, said Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi.

According to him “Most of the appointees has little knowledge of the workings of organisations they head, adding that this often lead to anti-people policies, reduced productivity and other problems.

“I have seen areas where frustration has set in among civil servants, leading to low morale and poor delivery of service.”

Abdullahi revealed that the Bill would be presented for first reading in June.  “First, it is to improve the efficiency of the public service in terms of delivery of service through government programmes and initiatives.

“The essence of this bill, actually, is to look at some of these key areas like the relationship between the permanent secretary and the account officer with the minister as the political head.
