Insights Surface from Obasanjo, Peter Obi’s Closed-Door Talks
Indications have surfaced from a recent private meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
According to a report by the Nigerian Tribune, the two political figures deliberated on the current state of the nation and strategies for national recovery, among other critical matters. The meeting is said to be part of ongoing consultations building up to the 2027 general elections.
Peter Obi shared a brief update on the visit via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that he was joined by several key allies: Dr. Yunusa Tanko, spokesperson for the Labour Party’s presidential campaign council; Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the party’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate in Lagos; and Segun Adebanjo.
Providing more context, Dr. Tanko—also the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement—described the engagement as a “meeting of like minds,” centered around the nation’s challenges and potential pathways to recovery.
“It was a meeting of like minds. Don’t forget, Mr. Obi once served under Chief Obasanjo’s leadership. There was a need for them to consult and explore ways to rescue the country,” he said.
Tanko added that the conversation also emphasized the importance of civic engagement and voter participation.
On whether Peter Obi has formally declared interest in the 2027 presidential race, Tanko clarified, “That would be a public declaration. When the time comes, everyone will be informed.”
Attempts to get a comment from former President Obasanjo did not yield results. One of his aides, when approached, simply said, “It was a closed-door meeting. You may want to reach out to Peter Obi’s team for further details.”
