INEC debunks reports on 2027 election timetable

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports claiming that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, describing such information as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Commission clarified that no timetable or schedule has been announced for the 2027 polls. INEC stressed that it remains committed to operating strictly within the confines of the law.
The Commission referenced Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates that a Notice of Election must be published not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election. It explained that any purported timetable issued outside this statutory requirement could not have originated from INEC.
INEC assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election would be released in due course and in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022.
The electoral body also urged the public and media organisations to ignore the fake reports and rely solely on information disseminated through INEC’s verified and official communication channels for accurate updates.
The statement was signed by the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, and dated January 2, 2026.
