IGP Egbetokun meets police medical commanders, launches nationwide health campaign

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery within the Nigeria Police Force as he met with Heads of Police Medical Facilities nationwide on Thursday in Abuja.

The inaugural National Meeting and Conference, held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan International Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, focused on the theme: “Transforming Policing in Nigeria: The Evolving Role of the Directorate of Force Medical Services.”

This was contained in statement issued on Thursday and signed by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja

The event brought together medical commanders, senior officers, development partners, and key stakeholders in police healthcare.

In his address, the IGP described the wellbeing of police personnel as central to operational readiness and national security. He noted that the recent upgrade of the Police Medical Services to a full-fledged Directorate in August 2025 was a deliberate reform aimed at boosting officer welfare and standardizing medical services across all Commands and Formations.

Egbetokun highlighted the extensive reach of the Police medical structure, which currently comprises 164 hospitals, clinics, and posts serving officers, their families, and nearby communities. He said the network ranks among the most expansive law enforcement medical systems in Africa and remains vital to efforts to build a modern and professionally competent police force.

Force Medical Director, AIG Nkechi I. Eze, the first female AIG to head the Directorate, expressed appreciation for the IGP’s support and outlined the expanded responsibilities of the Directorate, which include preventive healthcare, trauma and emergency response, medical training, and participation in national public health initiatives. She projected that ongoing reforms and collaborations with development partners would accelerate the modernization of police medical services.

A key feature of the conference was the launch of the “Know Your Numbers” campaign, a preventive health initiative designed to encourage officers to regularly check critical health indicators such as blood pressure, blood sugar levels, pulse rate, and hepatitis/HIV status. The programme aims to reduce avoidable health risks and promote long-term wellbeing within the Force.

IGP Egbetokun reiterated his resolve to building a resilient, responsive, and professional police institution, emphasizing that officer health remains a foundational pillar of the Force’s strength.
