Power Supply to Improve in Two Weeks as Gas Pipeline Repairs Near Completion — Adelabu’s Aide

Nigerians are expected to begin experiencing improved electricity supply within the next two weeks as ongoing maintenance on a critical gas pipeline approaches completion, according to Adebayo Olowoniyi, Chief Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power.

Olowoniyi made this known during an appearance on Arise TV on Thursday, shortly after the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, publicly apologised for the recent wave of power outages affecting households, businesses and institutions across the country.

He described the minister’s apology as a demonstration of leadership, noting that it was not an admission of personal fault but a commitment to resolving the challenges in the sector.

According to him, the disruptions in electricity supply were largely caused by maintenance work on a major gas pipeline, which is crucial to Nigeria’s power generation. He explained that about 75 per cent of the country’s electricity depends on gas-fired plants.

Olowoniyi expressed optimism that gas supply would soon return to normal levels, enabling power plants to ramp up production to previous capacity levels recorded in recent months.

He added that early signs of recovery were already evident, with gradual improvements expected as gas pressure builds up in the pipeline over the coming days.

The development follows Adelabu’s assurance in Abuja that the situation would stabilise within two weeks, citing commitments from gas suppliers and progress on repair works.

The minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s goal of increasing electricity generation to 6,000 megawatts by the end of 2026, describing the current outages as a temporary challenge.

Nigeria’s power sector continues to face longstanding issues, including insufficient gas supply, outdated infrastructure, transmission constraints and financial difficulties across the industry.
