Governor Appoints Chinese National Economic Adviser

In a landmark step to attract foreign investment and strengthen global ties, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has appointed Mr. Li Zhensheng, a Chinese national, as the state’s Economic Adviser.

The announcement came on Thursday, August 14, 2025, during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Bauchi State Government and the China Global Promotion Cooperation Research Centre at the Government House in Bauchi.

Governor Mohammed said the appointment and the MoU were part of a broader strategy to position Bauchi as a leading destination for international collaboration, with targeted investments in agriculture, healthcare, education, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, and trade.

“This partnership is about changing lives and opening Bauchi to the world,” he said, adding that the initiative aligns with the diplomatic engagement between Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and China’s President Xi Jinping.

As part of the agreement, a Bauchi State Representative Office will be established in China to coordinate and fast-track project execution.

Mr. Li Zhensheng, who also chairs the China Global Promotion Cooperation Research Centre, pledged his commitment to driving Bauchi’s economic expansion. “We are determined to support Bauchi in achieving sustainable growth, modern infrastructure, and better living standards,” he said.

The appointment is the first time a Nigerian state has named a Chinese national to such a role, underscoring Bauchi’s bold vision for global economic integration.

Public reaction has been divided—some lauding the governor’s forward-thinking approach to investment, while others stress the need for transparency in the partnership’s rollout.

Governor Mohammed assured stakeholders that the collaboration would generate jobs, enhance skills, and boost Bauchi’s profile on the international stage, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to building a business-friendly environment.
