Gov. Abba Yusuf’s Superlative 100 Days In Office

By Abdulmalik Suleiman

Like similar other governors that were sworn in on the 29th of May this year, the tenure of the incumbent chief executive governor of Kano State, Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf is expected to mark 100 days in office in few days to come, and it is only fit and proper that a comprehensive appraisal of the impact that his government has made should be carried out by stakeholders within and outside the state.

For a proper and unbiased analysis of his regime to be carried out, such must and should be done within the context of the circumstances that threw up his government just as such endeavor should also be done within the abiding creed propelling his party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

NNPP is a people centric political party with the core objective of emancipating the people from poverty, lack and misery using education, human capital development as the driving force to ensure and achieve complete egalitarianism of the common man from total domination of the elites.

The new administration derives its ideology and philosophy from the Kwankwassiyya Movement which in turn remains under the leadership and guidance of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso who is also the National leader of the party.

These practical application of the philosophy of the Kwankwassiyya Movement as aptly demonstrated by the eight years impactful leadership of Kwankwaso as the governor of Kano State had greatly endeared the NNPP to the people of the state and it was very easy for the people to relate with the party when Yusuf was presented to them again in 2023 after he was robbed in 2019.

Upon his assumption of office, the energetic and focused governor has continued to further the template of good governance to the people of the state as initially put in place by Kwankwaso by implementing the core programmes and policies of the party.

Hardly had Gov. Abba sworn in, he hit the ground running by putting in place all the necessary mechanisms for the implementation of the vision of the platform for the benefit of the people of the state.

As stated above, human capacity building remains one of the core objectives of the Kwankwassiyya and by extension, the NNPP.

EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT

To further demonstrate this, Governor Abba immediately ordered the re-opening of no fewer than 26 higher institutions of learning that the former administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje closed.

This has no doubt expanded opportunities for secondary school graduates to pursue higher learning, which they were denied by the past regime which didn’t really accord priority to mass education of Kanawa to become productive members of the Nigerian society as done by Kwankwaso’s administration.

Added to this, is the decision of the state government under the leadership of Governor Abba to re-open opportunities for overseas training to Kano indigenes by resuming scholarship grants to brilliant yet indigent students in the state who have demonstrated the needed zeal to pursue higher education.

It must be noted that the former government not only terminated the initiative upon resumption of office. It is also to be stated that those who were overseas when the last government came on board had to drop out of studies because of the decision of the Ganduje-led government to suspend payment of their fees and living wages.

Governor Abba said that the scheme has once again received a boost when it was revamped to further provide greater access to school pupils in the state to further their studies. It is also to the credit of the governor that the whole architecture for implementing the programme has been recalibrated for greater efficiency.

SCHOLARSHIP

Many selected students of the state were recently sent abroad on scholarship programmes in furtherance of the objective for which the initiative was put in place by the state government. To ensure quality living of civil servants in the state, Governor Abba has made it a policy of the government to pay the salaries, wages, pensions and other entitlements of workers in the state by 25th of every month.

Lighting

Infrastructure is another key area, which the people of the state have begun to feel the impact of Governor Abba who have since commenced the rehabilitation of streetlights across the metropolis. Apart from repairing them, he has also ensured that the street lighting infrastructure is functional with a view to not only provide aesthetics in the evenings but to also serve security purposes.

HEALTHCARE

In the healthcare sector, the governor has resuscitated and commissioned for use, the moribund Hasiya Bayero Hospital which was sold for paltry 6millliin to one of Ganduje’s crony has rebuild and remodelled to take care of tertiary healthcare needs of the people.

Road Construction

Also ongoing is the massive reconstruction of roads across the 44 local government areas of the state. The state government has also redesigned and remodeled the Government House Roundabout just as it is reworking the state’s security architecture to combat the scourge of insecurity.

No doubt, judging by the numerous accomplishments of the current government in Kano within the span of just 100 days in office, it is safe to state that the people of the state are in for quality and good governance in the next four years.
