Gabon Suspends Social Media Platforms Citing Threats to National Unity
Gabon has imposed an indefinite suspension on social media platforms, citing threats to national stability and social cohesion.
The decision was announced Tuesday by the country’s media regulator, the High Authority for Communication, in a televised address delivered by its spokesperson, Jean-Claude Mendome.
The authority said the measure became necessary due to what it described as the growing circulation of inappropriate, defamatory, hateful and insulting content online.
According to the regulator, such content undermines human dignity, public morality and national unity, while also fueling division and unrest across the country. It further raised concerns about the spread of false information, cyberbullying and the unauthorized publication of personal data.
“These actions risk igniting social conflict, destabilizing institutions and weakening democratic progress,” Mendome stated, stressing that the suspension is intended to safeguard public order.
The announcement did not clarify which specific social media platforms would be affected or how long the restrictions would remain in place. However, the authority emphasized that freedom of expression — including the right to express opinions and criticize — remains a constitutionally protected right in Gabon.
The move comes amid heightened sensitivity around online discourse, as authorities seek to balance digital freedoms with concerns over national security and public stability.
