From Setback to Supreme Power: How Tinubu Turned Convention Defeat into Presidential Victory
By Olumide Bajulaiye
In politics, moments of defeat often define the limits of ambition. But for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the events surrounding the 2022 convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) became not a dead end—but a turning point.
At the height of the party’s internal power play, the stakes were unmistakably high. Alliances were fluid, loyalties tested, and influence measured in real time. Tinubu, a central figure in the APC’s formation and growth, entered the convention with a clear preference for who should emerge as National Chairman. Yet, when the final decision went against his choice, it signaled what many perceived as a rare political setback.
For critics and observers alike, it appeared to be a dent in his long-standing dominance within the party. Questions surfaced. Had his influence waned? Was this the beginning of a political decline?
But Tinubu’s response defied the expectations of a typical power broker.
There was no public outcry. No visible fracture. No dramatic resistance. Instead, what followed was a calculated quiet—an approach rooted in restraint and long-term strategy.
Behind the scenes, however, the story was different.
Even as some party figures openly questioned his standing—going as far as dismissing his widely recognized “National Leader” status—Tinubu remained focused. While the spotlight shifted and narratives formed, he continued to build, consolidate, and reinforce his political network.
His approach reflected three enduring elements of his political philosophy: structure, memory, and patience.
Structure—in maintaining a loyal and effective grassroots and elite network across the country.
Memory—in understanding political cycles, alliances, and the weight of past contributions.
Patience—in waiting for the right moment to reassert influence without unnecessary confrontation.
That moment came sooner than many anticipated.
Against the backdrop of earlier doubts, Tinubu emerged as the APC’s presidential candidate and went on to win the 2023 general election—ultimately becoming President of Nigeria.
His journey from being sidelined in internal party dynamics to occupying the nation’s highest office underscores a broader lesson in political endurance: influence is not always loud, and power is not always immediate.
Sometimes, it is built quietly—over time—until the outcome speaks for itself.
