Fresh Details Emerge Over Removal of Police Spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin

Fresh details have surfaced regarding the removal of the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin, and the possible officer who may take over the position.

As earlier reported by The WHISTLER, Hundeyin was relieved of his duties on Thursday by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu.

However, as of Thursday, no official signal confirming the development had been issued, fuelling speculation that the decision might still be reconsidered.

Sources at the Force Headquarters in Abuja told The Eagle Online that Hundeyin’s alleged offence was linked to a television interview he granted recently.

The sources could not, however, clearly identify the exact interview in question.

During the interview, Hundeyin reportedly commented on the Electoral Act and also made remarks concerning the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.

He was also said to have addressed the rumoured appointment of Disu as Inspector-General of Police.

In his remarks, Hundeyin reportedly stated that the then Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Annex could not be appointed IGP because he was due for retirement in April 2026.

According to sources, these comments reportedly angered some members of Disu’s inner circle and formed the basis of the complaints against him.

Regarding his possible replacement, sources indicated that a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) may be redeployed from Lagos State to assume the role.

However, the identity of the officer could not be independently confirmed as of press time.

One insider, who was unsure of the officer’s surname, mentioned that the individual might be a DCP named Gbenga.

Another source hinted that the police hierarchy may revert to the previous practice where officers of the rank of Commissioner of Police (CP) serve as the Force spokesperson.

The source noted that in many other security agencies within the Armed Forces of Nigeria, spokespersons are typically of the rank of Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) or, at the very least, a Commissioner of Police.
