Free Bus Rides for Civil Servants, Students Kick Off Monday in Kaduna
The Kaduna State Government has announced the launch of a free bus service for civil servants, retirees, and students starting Monday, as part of its Subsidised Transport Scheme (KSTS).
In a statement released on Sunday, the Director-General of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), Mr. Inuwa Ibrahim, said the initiative will run for an initial period of six months and aims to ease commuting difficulties for targeted groups.
Ibrahim explained that the scheme will cover students in both public and private schools, from primary to tertiary levels. He added that the programme aligns with Governor Uba Sani’s broader agenda to cushion the rising cost of living for Kaduna residents.
Following the initial phase, the government will implement a 60% subsidy on bus fares for the general public.
To ensure smooth operation, strict guidelines will be enforced. Civil servants must present a valid staff ID along with their National Identification Number (NIN) to access the service. Students are required to wear their full school uniforms, and security personnel must show proper identification to benefit from the scheme.
The buses will operate on three major routes:
- Route 1: Rigachikun – Kawo Market – Sabo – Sabo Market – Kawo – Rigachikun
- Route 2: Rigachikun – Kawo – Independence Way – Yakowa Road – and back via the same path
- Route 3: Tudun Wada – Polytechnic Road – Sokoto Road – Kawo – and back
Ibrahim urged commuters to maintain order while boarding and discouraged pushing or jumping queues, stressing that proper conduct would be enforced throughout the operation.
The launch of the service follows the June 19, 2025, inauguration of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses by President Bola Tinubu during his visit to Kaduna.
