Former Kogi Governor Ibrahim Idris Dies At 77 In UK

Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has died in the United Kingdom at the age of 77.

Idris reportedly died on Sunday, September 20, 2026. His death was confirmed to AIT by his nephew, Shehu Ahmed, while details surrounding the circumstances of his death were still being awaited.

The late former governor, popularly known as “Ibro,” governed Kogi State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2003 to 2012.

He was first elected governor in 2003 after defeating the then incumbent, Prince Abubakar Audu, and was sworn into office on May 29 of that year.

Although Idris won re-election in 2007, the result was later nullified by the courts following a legal challenge concerning the exclusion of Audu from the election. He subsequently won the March 2008 re-run and returned to office.

Idris completed his tenure in January 2012 and was succeeded by Captain Idris Wada.

Before entering politics, Idris was a businessman with interests in construction, furniture manufacturing and hospitality. He founded Ibro Trading Company and established a furniture factory in Sokoto as well as Ibro Hotel.

Following news of his death, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former governor Yahaya Bello and other government officials visited the deceased’s Abuja residence to condole with his family.

Idris was born in 1949 in Idah, Kogi State, and was one of the longest-serving civilian governors in the state’s history.
