Fire Disaster: Shettima to Lead FG Delegation to Kano Over Singer Market Blaze
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead a high-powered Federal Government delegation to Kano State to commiserate with victims of the devastating fire at Singer Market.
According to a State House press release, the delegation will depart Abuja on Monday to formally convey the President’s condolences to traders who reportedly lost goods worth billions of naira in the inferno that engulfed the popular market over the weekend.
The fire, which broke out on Saturday evening and raged into Sunday morning, caused widespread destruction at Singer Market, regarded as one of Nigeria’s largest food markets. The latest incident marks the second fire outbreak at the market within two weeks, raising fresh concerns among traders and residents.
During the visit, the delegation is expected to pledge financial assistance on behalf of the Federal Government to support affected traders and assist the Kano State Government in facilitating the swift reopening of the market.
Members of the delegation include Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas; Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin; Senator Kawu Ismaila; and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi.
Also on the team are the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, and the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Zubaida Umar.
President Tinubu had earlier spoken by telephone with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, expressing sympathy to the traders and people of the state over the incident.
The President expressed concern that the latest blaze occurred barely two weeks after a previous fire destroyed dozens of shops and property at the same market. He has since ordered a comprehensive investigation into the recurring fire outbreaks in major markets across the country.
