FG Welcomes US Congressional Report, Seeks Deeper Nigeria–US Cooperation on Security

The Federal Government of Nigeria has described a recent report by committees of the United States Congress as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation on security and stability.

In a statement issued by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government acknowledged the findings and recommendations contained in the joint report submitted to the White House by the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Appropriations Committee, which focused on security developments in Nigeria, including concerns about religious persecution.

The government admitted that parts of the country continue to grapple with serious security challenges such as terrorism, banditry, and communal clashes, which have led to loss of lives and destruction of property. It extended condolences to victims and affected communities across all regions, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.

However, the Federal Government firmly rejected claims of any state-sponsored religious persecution, stressing that Nigeria has no policy targeting any religious group. It maintained that the ongoing violence is driven by complex factors, including terrorism, organised crime, and longstanding communal tensions—not government bias.

Reaffirming its commitment to constitutional provisions, the government noted that Nigeria guarantees freedom of religion and worship for all citizens, pledging equal protection under the law.

Highlighting ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity, the statement outlined intensified military and law enforcement operations, improved intelligence sharing, and enhanced inter-agency collaboration. It also pointed to recent counter-terrorism offensives that have disrupted criminal networks and weakened armed groups.

The government further disclosed increased surveillance and clearance operations in forested areas, alongside the deployment of specially trained forest guards aimed at denying terrorists and bandits safe havens and improving local security presence.

In addition to security measures, authorities said efforts are underway to strengthen humanitarian support for internally displaced persons, facilitate the safe return of affected communities, and promote peacebuilding initiatives.

The Federal Government reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with the United States, expressing readiness for continued dialogue and cooperation based on mutual respect and shared responsibility.

It assured that Nigeria will keep engaging international partners through diplomatic channels while prioritising its core responsibility of protecting all citizens.
