FG Unveils Seven Indigenous Herbal Medicines for Hepatitis B, Cancer, Ulcer, Hypertension

The Federal Government has unveiled seven indigenous herbal medicinal products developed from Nigerian plants to tackle major health conditions, including Hepatitis B, cancer, peptic ulcer, hypertension and high cholesterol.

Director-General of the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA), Prof. Martins Emeje, disclosed that the products were scientifically developed using indigenous medicinal plants and are aimed at expanding access to locally produced healthcare solutions.

Speaking on the products, Emeje said the first medicine, Namdavir, is a natural treatment for the Hepatitis B virus, describing it as highly effective against the disease.

He explained that the second product, Namdacid, was developed for the management of peptic ulcer disease, noting that ulcers remain a significant health challenge in many communities.

According to him, the third product, Turmegol, is designed for the prevention and management of cancers, including colorectal, ovarian and prostate cancers. He said scientific studies have shown that the herbal medicine can halt cancer progression and eliminate early cancer cells.

Emeje added that the agency also developed Namdorol, a natural medicine for managing high cholesterol and hypertension by helping to cleanse the body. He noted that its effectiveness has been scientifically investigated.

The agency also introduced Namgor, an aphrodisiac, and Zobo Tea, which is intended for the management of hypertension.

Meanwhile, the Shri Kannan highlighted the vast opportunities for Nigeria and India to strengthen collaboration in traditional medicine.

According to him, both countries can partner in medicinal plant research, scientific validation of traditional medicines, quality assurance, biodiversity conservation, academic exchanges, entrepreneurship and innovation in natural products.

Kannan said Nigeria and India share rich biodiversity, deep cultural heritage and centuries-old healing traditions, adding that their indigenous knowledge systems continue to provide valuable solutions for modern healthcare.
