FG instituted 5year moratorium on Establishment of Federal Universities

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has instituted a five-year moratorium on the creation of new federal tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

This resolution was reached during the FEC’s weekly meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja, and chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the suspension applies to all categories of federal higher education institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Speaking to journalists, Alausa emphasized that the core issue in Nigeria’s education sector is not the number of institutions, but rather the inefficiencies caused by overlapping mandates. He noted that the focus should now shift to improving infrastructure and staffing, rather than expanding access through the proliferation of new schools.
