FG Hails Finland Over Simon Ekpa’s Terrorism Conviction

The Federal Government has applauded the decision of the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland, which on Monday handed down a six-year jail term to Simon Ekpa, the self-acclaimed Biafra agitator, for terrorism-related offences.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement, described the ruling as a historic milestone.

According to him, it not only offers justice to the many innocent Nigerians whose lives were devastated by Ekpa’s incitement and financing of violent activities, but also strengthens diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Finland.

“For years, Ekpa’s reckless propaganda and orchestration of violence under the guise of IPOB’s terror campaign left a trail of destruction—families torn apart, businesses ruined, children orphaned, and communities living in constant fear.

“Hundreds of lives were lost, while countless others suffered permanent scars from his unlawful agenda aimed at destabilizing our nation,” Idris said.

He added that Finland’s judiciary, by upholding the rule of law, had affirmed Nigeria’s long-standing position and sent a strong message to extremists worldwide: those who weaponize terror to destabilize societies will eventually face justice.

The statement reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and protecting citizens.

It pledged continued deployment of diplomatic, military, and judicial resources to safeguard peace, unity, and territorial integrity.

The government also urged individuals misled by Ekpa and his cohorts to drop their weapons and embrace dialogue, stressing that Nigeria is a nation with room for all, but cannot thrive under violence and disunity.

Idris further expressed appreciation to the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Armed Forces, intelligence and security agencies, the Federal Ministry of Justice, and the Nigeria Police for their sacrifices and dedication in defending the nation.

He praised their efforts as the backbone of Nigeria’s unity.

“As we witness this defining moment, the Federal Government calls on all Nigerians at home and abroad to unite in pursuit of peace, stability, and national progress,” the statement concluded.
