Wike: Returning Obi to PDP Will Spell Doom for the Party
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be courting disaster if it considers readmitting former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into its ranks.
Speaking during a media chat on Monday, Wike accused the PDP of failing to learn from the missteps that led to its poor outing in the 2023 general elections. He recalled warning party leaders against concentrating both the presidential ticket and the national chairmanship in the North, describing the decision as unjust and politically reckless.
“From day one, I told my colleagues they were shooting themselves in the foot. You can’t have both the presidential candidate and the national chairman from the same region. I said it would backfire, and it did. The party suffered because of it,” Wike stated.
The former Rivers State governor faulted the PDP for ignoring repeated calls for fairness, insisting that the party’s arrogance “purged it” at the polls. He reaffirmed that the presidency must rotate to the South in the spirit of equity and stability.
On speculations about Obi’s possible return, Wike was blunt: “Bring Obi back to where? You want to kill the party? This is someone who called the PDP rotten. So, now the party is suddenly good enough? Ambition can drive people even to Satan’s house.”
He argued that such a move would erode the PDP’s credibility and expose it as a party driven by ambition rather than ideology.
“If you want to destroy this party, go ahead—bring Obi back. But don’t pretend it’s about principle. PDP can only survive if it holds firmly to equity, justice, and zoning,” Wike warned.
