FG, ASUU reach renegotiated agreement to end disruptions in Universities

The Federal Government has unveiled a renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing the development as a major turning point in efforts to restore stability, trust and quality in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, presented the agreement in Abuja on Wednesday, noting that it underscores the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to accessible, high-quality education and uninterrupted academic calendars in public universities.

According to Alausa, the renegotiated terms address long-standing concerns between the government and the university lecturers’ union, with a focus on promoting industrial harmony, improving learning outcomes and preventing recurring disruptions in the academic system.

He said the agreement was reached after extensive consultations and engagements with key stakeholders, adding that the government remains determined to rebuild confidence in the nation’s universities and ensure that students can complete their studies without avoidable delays.

The minister expressed optimism that the new agreement would usher in a more collaborative relationship between the Federal Government and ASUU, while laying the foundation for sustainable reforms in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
